Barton reading is designed for one-on-one student-teacher instruction. Barton is a “print-to-speech” approach. It begins with letters and sounds, focusing on building phonics skills. The program teaches reading and spelling simultaneously. It teaches the “why” behind spelling and places a heavy emphasis on spelling rules.

*If a student does not pass the Screening, we will do Foundation in Sounds first, then Barton. This program builds auditory skills needed to be successful in Barton. For more information on Foundation in Sounds visit their website.

EBLI is a “speech-to-print” approach that quickly maps sounds to letters using authentic text. Students are introduced to multiple letter spellings within the context of whole words, not in isolation. EBLI integrates phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, handwriting, and writing in the lessons.
For a comparison of Orton Gillingham and EBL read this article.
After the initial assessments, parents and I will decide which approach will work best for the student.

Handwriting Without Tears curriculum offers a multi-sensory approach to teaching letter formation. I offer both print and cursive teaching. For more information read About Handwriting Without Tears”
Currently, I am only offering this service in person. Students can add this to their Barton tutoring session or as a separate session.
The initial assessment for Print instruction is $120 for an in-depth evaluation. No evaluation for cursive.
Sessions will include:
- one-on-one tutoring (1 or 2x a week as needed)
- a workbook for home practice
- CD for repeated practice that helps solidify the steps in letter formation
Note: if adding to Barton tutoring, student will need to add a 3rd day so the student still gets the minimum requirement of 2- 50 minute reading & spelling sessions spread out into three sessions.
